End of an era
Alder Constructions says farewell to Terry Smith as he retires from a long and rewarding career in the civil infrastructure industry.
Terry commenced his career working as a surveyor around the NSW Central Coast in the early 80’s. Terry gradually progressed his way through various positions within the industry, working with consultancies and construction firms, across a broad range of civil based construction before moving to QLD, working as a civil Project Manager.
After relocating to QLD, Terry originally worked at ‘Civilcon’ in the early 90’s, before becoming a Director at ‘Joblin Constructions’, which then became became ‘Joblin and Smith’. This company specialised in structural concrete work, sewer pumping stations, reservoirs, treatment plants, tunnels and concrete tilt panels. Terry left ‘Joblin and Smith’ at the start of the new millennium to join ‘Neumann Contractors’ in the role of Gold Coast region manager, working very closely with the Neumann family.
After working alongside Greg Alder of Alder Construction on a number of projects, Terry left Neumann Contractors in 2007, to become the Civil Manager at Alder Constructions, where he has remained ever since for the past 12 years.
Notable projects within QLD that Terry has been directly involved with include:
- Brisbane International Airport Terminals
- The Observatory Subdivision
- Robina to Varsity Lakes Rail Extension
- Gateway Motorway Extensions and Upgrades
- Coomera Watersports Lake
- Hinze Dam Upgrades
- Robina Reservoir
- Gold Coast Desalination Plant
- Sextons Hill Road Upgrade at Terranora (Tweed, NSW)
Those who have worked with Terry at Alder Constructions have always had great respect for him as a leader and mentor and he will be missed. Terry has pushed our team to achieve more than they thought was capable, providing invaluable support and encouragement over the 12 years he has been with Alder. We also want to congratulate Terry on receiving the 2020 Presidents’ Award from Civil Contractors Federation Queensland Limited (CCFQLD) for his contribution to our industry.
