Project Details

This project involved the conservation of a the heritage, 113 year-old ex-railway bridge and associated civil infrastructure at Currumbin. The renewed bridge was constructed wider than the existing bridge with the heritage of the existing structure retained.

As part of value-engineering and cost savings for our client, Alder Constructions designed and constructed a specially designed hydraulic scissor lift that was fixed to a floating barge. The lifting device was used to float and place some of the precast concrete deck units onto the bridge piers near the centre of the creek where accessibility was a challenge.

2017 IPWEAQ Excellence Award Winner

Scope of Works

  • Upgrade and refurbishment of the existing bridge substructure components that include wrought iron girders, cross beams and cast iron columns.
  • New bridge substructure components including precast concrete headstocks.
  • Construction of new precast concrete deck, stainless steel barriers along the bridge including approaches, connecting paths, lighting and utility services.
  • Environmental considerations were a high priority during construction due to close proximity to the sensitive marine environment of Currumbin Creek.

Benefits to the local community included:

  • Improved pedestrian and cycle facilities.
  • Retention of local heritage.
  • Improved safety.
