In road into construction

Stop right now, thank you very much…

Traffic Control can be a great introduction for young women looking to navigate a career in construction. With women accounting for approximately 15% of those employed by construction firms, there is an opportunity for increased participation alongside traditional trades and professional roles with a boom in female traffic control.

Support, advocacy and training drives from our industry organisations such as Civil Contractors Federation and Master Builders provide the platform for companies like Alder Constructions to facilitate these opportunities for both our workforce and wider network.

Keeping it in the family, one of our our Civil Site Manager, Les Nolte accompanied his daughter and her friend to complete their introductory traffic control course, ready to obtain their practical hours.  We coordinated this training through Civil Contractors Federation – Civil Train program, providing an important stepping stone for these young women, unsure about their career paths and assisting with gainful employment.

There is also something to be said about women in traffic control roles and increased safety due to their personality attributes, displaying empathy with frustrated road users and ability to diffuse situations calmly. An article in the Age, male drivers respond better to women notes women are usually more patient and can deal with upset road users impacted by traffic delays. This can only create a more positive community sentiment during key infrastructure upgrades.

We had great success with women traffic controllers from Reliable Traffic Management on our recently completed commercial precinct – The York, Beenleigh with a tight site footprint and management of access for local businesses.  These women had a positive influence on our team and the local community and have assisted in the traffic control on our newest commercial office development – M1 Connect on Siganto Drive, Helensvale.
