Spirits High as Construction Commences at Wellbeing Centre in Lismore
When long-standing local not-for-profit organisation Rekindling the Spirit Limited, lost its Woodlark Street office during the devastating 2022 floods, Lismore locals were devastated to be without the much-needed community service.
Now, after years of planning, the new facility at 25 Uralba Street is currently under construction and will soon provide a safe, modern and culturally significant space to support the physical, social, emotional and cultural wellbeing of the community.
Alder has been appointed to deliver the works, which will include demolition, site preparation, and construction of the new centre, followed by the refurbishment program.
A purpose-built facility designed to deliver vital health, cultural and community services to the region, the two-level building will feature ground floor parking with community service spaces above. Here locals can access a dedicated Yarning Circle, consultation rooms for counselling, physiotherapy, dental, pathology and other allied health services, and shared areas for information exchange and support.
The commencement of construction was formally marked with a site ceremony led by local Indigenous representatives, celebrating the completion of demolition and the official start of construction works.
A perforated facade will form a striking architectural feature, allowing uninterrupted views of the Bora Ring at Lismore Showgrounds, while Widjabul Wia-Bal artists will curate artwork throughout the facility to reflect local culture and stories.
In addition to the new centre, a second facility at 92 Uralba Street, which currently houses other services, will be decommissioned and refurbished to modern standards, providing improved accessibility, upgraded services, additional consultation facilities, and refreshed internal and external finishes.
Dean Cheffers, Alder CEO – Constructions, welcomed the start of the project, highlighting the company’s commitment to delivering a facility that meets both the practical needs and cultural significance of the community.
“We are proud to be delivering a facility that will have such a positive and lasting impact for the people of Lismore,” said Mr Cheffers.
“This project is more than just bricks and mortar, it’s about building resilience, supporting the community, and creating a culturally rich space that everyone can feel proud of.
“The team at Alder is committed to working closely with Rekindling the Spirit and the local community to ensure the facility is delivered safely, on time, and with the cultural respect the project deserves.”
Construction is expected to reach completion in July 2026.
